Spring dropped while changing oil filter

Hey all,

Went out to change the oil, dropped oil filter first and heard a "plop" in drain pan. Looked and found a spring. Drain pan was empty at start of project. Also found small round plastic disk on ground.

Don't have any idea where it came from other than filter mount. Don't want to put up new oil filter if I need to fix something.

Is this critical?

Thanks in advance

Lawrence

Could it have possibly come from your oil filter wrench? I know it's a long shot but my old-school strap has some springs in it for seemingly no reason at all.

Pictures of these parts might help here.

I have been told on "The Diesel Stop" forum that the parts belong in the oil filter mount as the "oil filter bypass". I "think" that I got everything back in place as it belongs, but am worried that it will happen again and mess up engine. Have been looking for replacement, but no joy. International states that NO dealer has one, Ford says same. Now what??

If I used a "remote" oil filter mount, would it matter if it came apart again?

Thanks

Lawrence
