I've got two issues with my truck. One issue is that the temp gauge goes past the L in normal when I am running on the freeway. Occasionally it will jump back to the M or A but I will quickly go back to being past the L. I will be putting a new thermostat tomorrow morning just in case.
Another problem is that when when I run it on the freeway for around 30 min the oil pressure gauges gets all wacky. It jumps from normal to low and then I will just stay on low. Its got plenty of oil in it and there are no leaks. Whats up with this?
From experience i have always seen ford gauges especially temp gauges that read low. As far as the oil pressure goes is it real fast or will it climb high and low. A new tstat wont hurt anything but don't expect it to fix anything the two could be related but if your worried about oil psi then do a pressure test check for high or low pressure and if your worried bout the temp gauge pull the codes my 94 ranger as never come past low on the temp and oil pressure reads all the way to the bump stop and has no mechanical or fuel issues. do you want your gauges fixed or just worrying about engine condition
Just a thought. Your problems could be electrical.
Bad ground, flaky voltage regulator ( I believe that there's one on the circuit board for the gauges), or maybe bad solder joints on the circuit board.
One quick check would be to substitute a resistor for the temp sensor. Usually somewhere in a Haynes or Chilton, they tell you what resistance should be for what temp.
So, you could take off the temp sensor connector and connect it to one end of a resistor, other end to a solid ground. Make sure that the connections are secure.
Then take a jaunt on the freeway and see if the temp gauge acts up. If it still does, the problem isn't with the engine or the temp sensor. Pretty good chance it's the same for the oil.
That oil gauge is fake anyway. It's got a switch and a series resistor so that when oil pressure is above ~7 PSIG it will close the switch, and ground the gauge signal input. the resistor makes sure the needle don't peg out. Probably just a bad switch.
You can fix it, or convert it to a real gauge (search around here for info), or just get an aftermarket one.
The temp gauge, do you have an IR thermometer? If so just check the temperature at the water outlet on top of the engine. If not, you can still check... just stick a thermometer in the radiator while it's running. You'll just have to take the cap off before you warm it up.
