I have access to a 2009 6.0 powerstroke out of a wrecked van with 37k miles complete for $2000. other then the obvious, changing the intake, fuel/oil filter housing, pan. Is everything else the same? want to put in my 03 that has 250,000 miles and needs studs, head gaskets, turbo and 3 injectors. I thought about taking my 06 motor with 300k miles and install since I broke trans, rear axle and both leaf springs the other day
It's almost a direct plug and play. You'll have to swap a few things and may have to alter the wiring harness but it's a pretty easy swap. $2K for a 37K mile motor is dang cheap.
surprised no one has tried this yet, well will let you know how it goes because I'm going for it
I don't see why it wouldn't work, just use the block and heads and take everything off of your motor and install it on the new one. 2K for a 6.0L with low miles is a killer deal if its in good shape. The one issue you will have is the location of the ICP, which you will need to either get the harness for the later model engine or modify your old one to reach the ICP sensor and the EBP sensor is in a different location, not sure how much that will matter though as the EBP is an inferred value in the 03'.
Wasn't the HP/TQ values different for the van compared to the truck? I thought i read somewhere the van was rated much lower than the truck motor? Might do some checking to see and find out what it components made that difference. Or, was it done through the PCM???

It's done through the PCM. The basic motor components are the same. I know there are differences in some component locations, but that is easily remedied using "old" motor parts. Wiring on the 03 motors is different due to ICP location.
-HPOP (plus ALL related HPO components)
-20mm heads versus 18mm heads (therefore different injector hold-downs)
-commonized and non-commonized rocker arm carriers
-DLC coated versus non-DLC coated injectors
-piston domes (and glow plugs)
-upper and lower oil pans
-intake manifold
-oil/fuel filter housings
Those are all the engine related issues to overcome. The quick version.
No need to change pcm cal so far as I know just use the trucks pcm. The pinout is the same.
Its reall not a bad swap to do imo. Make one look like the other.
