so I've been having trouble with my 86 F150 302. I've been having issues with it for about a week (issues starting and running rough), and it only seems to be getting worse. At first the issue seemed minor (maybe a fuel pump), but now my truck will not start at all and when I try to start it it will turn over and puke oil everywhere. Along with this it will turn over for a couple seconds then make a loud single knock and stop turning over. Does this mean that I have a cracked block? or a busted piston? or maybe a blown head gasket? I don't wanna sink any more money into the vehicle if the engine is junk. Any suggestions as to what is causing this would be much appreciated.

I think we need a lot more info to make the call. Where is the oil coming from? Is the engine stock and has the EFI system still on it? What mods have been done? When you try to start it and it does turn over how fast is it turning - slow or normal?
the engine is stock EFI, no mods, when it turns over its at normal speed then it stops suddenly, and I cannot figure out where the oil is coming from, looks to be coming from the drivers side, I have had an ongoing problem with an oil leak but from bad piston rings but it was never this bad, i've probably lost 2 litres of oil without the engine even starting, it pukes oil just from turning it over
as long as the plugs are dry and the batteries charged it will turn over, but only for a couple seconds before I heard the knock and it stops, then once i turn the key off an try again it usually does the same thing, all while puking oil
The oil leak might be a problem with the oil filter. I had a really bad leak once when the old gasket from the previous filter stayed on. Oil went everywhere.
The knock might be due to the timing being way too far advanced. Has anything been done to the distributor?
no nothing has been done to the distributor, and ill check the filter but its been on there for a couple months so I didn't just change it, would that cause it to not start at all though, and a couple days ago when it was starting it was running extremely rough
not that its an old filter, but if that is what is causing it to leak so bad, regardless the leak is not coming from the filter, it is dripping down directly under the engine I just cannot find exactly where
The knock doesn't make sense. If there was something mechanical broke in the rotating assembly it would certainly make a knock and stop turning. However, it wouldn't turn again if you let it sit for a while. The crank would have to be turned in reverse to get whatever out of the bind. Then it would turn, but probably only to that point again.
You need to tell us where it is puking oil from.
A head gasket would make it puke water or see water in the oil .
Hey jrm4 !
I think I would take out all the spark plugs and look at each one. I went to
small engine school, many beers ago back in 1979. The instructor told us that "spark plugs tell a story".. Look and see what color they are...
Then I would turn the key and the starter and wheel the engine over to
see if it knocks again.
Then I would test the compression on each cylinder and write each reading
down.
If you have good even compression all the way around, then what ever is
wrong with the engine could not be that serious.
thanks leroy
I pulled the plugs 2 days ago and the were black and soaked, I cleaned them off and put them back in, after doing this my truck did start a couple times for me, running incredibly rough and leaking oil, then yesterday when i couldn't get it to start I pulled the plugs again, A few were soaked again so I cleaned them all off and tried to start it again but it would not start for me
plugs number 1,2,5,6 were soaked in what looks to be oil (black in colour), plugs 3 and 7 were a little wet and plugs number 4 and 8 were basically dry. In case i got the numbers wrong the 4 plugs that were soaked were the 4 closest to the front of the vehicle
Looks like you have the cylinder numbering correct 1-4 on the passenger's side and 5-8 on the driver's side. You say the front four are soaked in what looks to be oil - they are black. But, could that just be black from running very rich and yet wet with gas? What did they smell like?
Then the next two back, #'s 3 & 7, are wet - with gas? What did it smell like?
If that's true then my guess is that your fuel injection system has gone bananas and is injecting far too much gas, and that gas is running into the front cylinders moreso than the rear. Is the truck parked pointed a bit down hill?
This theory accounts for it running very rough, for the black plugs, and for the clunk when cranking as I think you are getting so much fuel that it is almost hydro-locking and stopping the starter. Then the gas runs past the rings and you can spin it again. If that is true then the oil might smell like gas - have you checked it?
But, this doesn't account for the "puking oil" syndrome.
