Timing chain?

I have a 4.2 with 330km (206k miles). Recently I have noticed some unfamiliar sounds that I'm trying to diagnose. First off, lately when starting the truck cold, it sometimes makes a metallic screech /clank-like noise. It just lasts for a moment when the engine catches, then disappears. Doesn't happen every time but has happened at least 1/2 dozen times the last couple of weeks. Sounds like metal gears colliding. Haven't noticed any drive-ability issues.

As well, I changed the oil a couple of days ago and when I stuck my head under the truck afterwards to check for leaks, I could hear a definite rattling / clattering noise from the area near the oil filter.

Does this sound like timing chain? Any tips or advice is appreciated.

I don't know much about the 4.2 but maybe open the oil filter
you replaced and check the paper for debris.

I had a similar issue with very similar sounds as you describe. Mine was on a 99 5.4.
When you say the engine "catches", do you mean when the starter engages and turns the engine over, or when the engine fires and first starts running? My noises happened within the first few seconds after the engine started.
My problem was one of the timing chains rubbing. It lead to a spun bearing.
If it were me, I would first rule out everything external. Rule out the alternator and everything run off the belt up front. If everything looked good, I would spend the money and time and pull the engine apart to check the timing chains and tensioners.

Thanks for the replies. The truck makes the screech /clank when the engine first fires. Noise lasts for maybe a second or so, just long enough to make you say "What the..." then it is fine and runs normally. The starter sounds the same as normal. As an fyi, I drove the truck multiple times yesterday and this am and it only did it yesterday morning the first time it was started. There definitely seems to be a knock or rattle present for the first while after start up.

I haven't cut open the old filter. To rule out the accessories, do I remove the serp belt and start the truck?

Yes that will work, don't run it long as you are probably aware or just check
bearings by hand.
I think maybe could be timing change tensioner like deputydog3
mentioned.
Idk if the 4.2 uses a check valve in the oil filter or not
Did you change brands of oil filters?

No, I've been using the same filter brand in the 18 months I've owned the truck. That is only the last 18,000kms though. Not sure about the first 312,000.
