4.9L I6 Q's: Timing and Oil Filter...
Just doing some research here and I have a couple of questions.
First, is the 4.9L I6 a collision engine? That is, if the timing breaks will the pistons collide with the valves?
Also, are there any options for the size of the oil filter used? I used to have a 7.3L naturally aspirated IDI diesel and I was able to user a larger PowerStroke oil filter (which required me to add one quart of oil to the stated capacity).
Thanks!

The big six easily runs over 200,000 with the regular filter, and religious oil changes. Some have gone 3-4 or even 5oo,ooo. Don't see any need for a larger capacity filter.
I'm not positive about it being a non interference engine, but I'm pretty sure is. It has fiber timing gear, and when it gives up finally, I don't believe valve or piston damage occurs. Thinking it just won't start.

I have over 170,000 on my I6 300, changed the oil, all filters, plugs, cap and rotor the other day and it purrs like new and I sailed through Calif. smog check today. I also flushed the transmission fluid and changed the filter. I think these motors are bullet proof and can't believe how well it continues to run.
