Ashtray modification?

Getting ready to add a new head unit and I keep looking at the ashtray as a waste of space. I'm not a smoker so I will never use it. I saw the one thread where someone made it into a gun case for his handgun which I liked and might go that direction but was also considering it as a possible location to run the new docking wires for the HU. Anybody do anything cool with theirs besides hold change or gum wrappers?

I don't have the time or money to do it, but i've stared at that spot thinking about how it's the perfect hiding spot for a switch for a nitros system.

iPod wire hookup is run to my ashtray, which makes a perfect holder for my iPod when hooked up.

Unhook and tuck the wire and close the ashtray for a really clean, out of sight look.

did you take the ashtray apart to make more usable space or just pretty much leave as is and rough the wire in through the back?

Clay (the previous owner) is the one who had the setup done, but everything is as it was when it left the factory, with just the wire run to the ashtray.

I can take pictures ifns you'd like.

Stewart, would you mind posting some pics? I put my I phone in the ashtray while I'm plowing and the stupid cord drives me batty. That's a great idea!

The ash tray seems like a pretty small place to keep a handgun.

Do you have captains chairs with a center console?

I had a kydex holster shop custom make me a holster that mounts to the bottom side of my center console between the drivers seat. Holds my G17 like a glove and hidden from view. Don't want to see the top of it? Throw a hand towel over it...

Yeah after I went out and looked at it again I realized the pic must have been the dash cup holder/ashtray that he used. Because the actual ashtray at the bottom of the dash is way too small. Even for a G26-27

It's just a wire fed to the ashtray from the back of the dash.

Connected:

Cord tucked, ready for the ashtray to be closed:

View from drivers seat:

Cord hanging out, just because....

At night, I tuck the cord and close the tray. Out of sight, out of mind.
