I am assuming it is the trucks original motor. Can you still ask the original owner if it is or not? To see if it's a 360 or 390 remove the oil pan. Look at the crankshaft's counter weights. If they are tapered towards their ends it is a 390. If they are squared off cut then it is a 360.

A manual that can help that is not too expensive is the Haynes manual for 73-79's as they are almost the same vehicle. Many 73-79 parts and assemblies can be used to upgrade your 72.
