I currently have a 1972 f250 base model 4x4 I had given to me by my uncle when I was 12, I plan on restoring it. It runs and drives but id Iike to indentify the engine. I beleive its a windsor 351 but I'm unsure.
A windsor 351 looks like a 302. Easiest way to tell is to look at the bottom bolt on the thermostat housing. If you could put a deep well socket and ratchet on it, it's a 351 Windsor. if its down begin the water pump, it's a 302

Could you tell me where the thermostat housing is?
It's a Fe block mostly 360 or 390..
If your going to be working on it don't ya think you should buy a motor manual so you'll know what your doing. And to where simple things are at. How to tune the engine.
If your changing out the thermostat don't put it in backwards..
orich

Its a little hard to buy a engine manual for a motor that I dont know what is... And I wont be doing the engine work I just have to buy the correct parts for the engine, because my friends dad is a mechanic and said he would help me rebuild it for free.
Thank you to the guy who posted my image. So what does it being an FE engine tell me and how would i figure out its cubic inches or possibly get a master rebuild kit for it?

These are things you should be asking your friends dad.
But I'll help ya out you have to pull the engine out and pull it all a part for inspections. Then order replacement parts.

Rebuilding an FE can be costly. Getting an off the shelf rebuild kit that is all inclusive is not going to happen. First thing you need to do is tear down the engine and inspect your parts. You may find that your cylinders need to be bored out and/or crank journals need turned. This will change the size bearings, rings and pistons you will need depending on how much was removed. I recommend separating the engine overhaul into to sections. Heads and bottom end.
Heads are not difficult to rebuild, but because of the complexity they are time consuming. Also unless your mechanic has a machine shop, be ready to outsource the head rebuild machining. I strongly recommend, new valve guides installed, as well as hardened exhaust valve seats installed at the very minimum. Then you mechanic can install the valve guides gaskets, and everything else.
Bottom end can be done mostly at any shop with some simple tools, except for the crankshaft. That will also have to be done at a machine shop.
Once you have a good idea on what parts and what size bearings your going to need, go here for parts Ford V-8 390-6.4L Engine Rebuild Kits, 1961-1976 . I would recommend calling them and talking about different options that they have. They can get a large verity of stock and performance parts, including Skat and CompCams to name a few. Remember to replace Head and Main bolts at least.
Lastly I would like to direct your attention to my build log of the 360FE I am currently working on. This is a personal project and as such It has been a while since I have updated it do to a lack of time to work on it. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...fe-engine.html Some of my pictures in the thread are not working because the links are broken, but I have a link in the tread to the full album with all the pictures in it. This build is not a typical build but rather an all out replacement/recondition of all wear items. When I am done the only parts I will not change are, head castings, block, intake manifold, valve and timing covers. My budget on this build is at 4K. I'm at 3,200 roughly and lack push rods, fuel pump and exhaust headers.
