so disconnect the batteries, then look up by the master cylinder.just to the right and way down in,close to the drivers side inner fender.you'll see the trans harness plug onto the TCM.it's held on by a 10mm head bolt.turn that out and then pull the plug.
now you'll see the plastic mount that holds the TCM in place.remove the upper and lower screws and remove this piece.
now the TCM is free to slide out towards you.you'll notice however the inner fender is in the way.remove the fenders chrome side trim (if xlt and equipped) then remove the screws/bolts just towards the TCM about mid way.you only need enough free so the inner fender can bend down enough for you to slide out and replace the TCM right there in back of the front wheel.sounds kinda like a pita, but it really only takes 20 mins start to finish.
replace the control unit with:
F4TF-12B565-AA
that one will control the E40D perfectly (far better than the 89-91 TCM's) and should be what is in your truck now.
how did you determine the TCM is bad? they rarely fail.
I determined because I looked at schematic lol and all symptoms point to it. tranny just rebuilt every component changed out including speed control unit on the rear punkin. every wire in truck goes though the TCM. gages act weird in humidity, choke and shift goes nuts and crazy. the TCM is in cab drivers side behind kick panel. I believe the tcm controls thermostat as well. looks easy enough to replace and thanks for bolt size didn't realize it was metric lol the computer is 22 years old.... conformal coating and chips finally got wore out way I figure it my friend.
