I have a 96 E_150 with 3:55 gears . Im wanting to swap to 3:73.
does anyone have any idea the cost of the change including labor.
wheres a good place to get the gears.ect...
thanks in advance
400 is alittle high, I bought Ford Racing Hi-po 4.10 gears for my 8.8 for $190 from Summit Racing. Get the 80 dollar install kit and you're good to go. If it's a 4wd van you'll need to do the front too though. I myself don't like the swapping axles with a junkyard axle idea. You never know what you're going to get, they are probably not in the best shape or they wouldn't be in the junkyard (most of the time). In my opinion it can save some headaches to just get the gears changed in the axle you have.
Changing from 3.55 to 3.73 is a pretty small change for the cost involved. You'd probably only see about 100 RPM difference on the freeway, and hardly anything as far as low end pulling power.
I swapped my 2.73 to a 3.73 in my 91 F150. I think that the total job was around $450 parts and labor. But i agree that going from 3.55 to 3.73 is not worth it. If you are looking for more low end power, go with at least 4.11.
