my 87 long wheelbase 4wd ranger. Is in bad need of repaint..The original color was black, however it was sprayed white, no prep just cans of spray paint.this will be my first attempt at a full paint job..My question is how much paint (recommended brands), primer, just what do I need to do and with what...Would like help...
Cracked block is absolutely right. There's a ton of good information both here at FTE and also at TRS for you to read through. YouTube is also a great tool.
You could also take a look at the thread from when I did my '88. It was my first time doing paint/bodywork but the end result was good. PPG Omni is a good entry level automotive paint. Some of the more expensive paints will orange-peel less meaning less final sanding for you, but even the inexpensive Omni with primers was about $600 so the bills add up quick. It's all in my thread and I tried to set it up so other first-timers would have some form of reference (even as an example of what not to do at some points). Let us know if you have any questions along the way! Painting can be extremely time consuming but is very fulfilling to look at what you've accomplished once it's all said and done.
And if you're going to all that trouble to bring back the body definitely take a good look at the firewall too. The first gens are prone to rusting really badly. Unfortunately I didn't discover my firewall issues until all the other bodywork was already done so I basically had to 'dig in' a second time.
400 wet or dry finish sand,No finer. Can use scotchbrites for hard to sand areas.Use good sandpaper and dont push too hard when sanding .Use a 2k(2 component) primer or direct to metal primer like epoxy.Might as well do base/clear coat.Black shows defects easily.Find an easy to spray clear coat.If it gets orange peel you can always color-sand with 2000/3000 grit paper.get a compressor with enough cfm and maybe an HVLP gun.practice a lot.Use a little screw on filter on the end of your gun so as not to get fish-eyes.Dont get wd-40 or silicones anywhere near your car!I would guess 3 quarts of each stage should be enough( clear/base/primer) for a ranger. if painting at home do it in AM before the bugs come out. Some people use windex to wipe down before spray/tack. could also make a temp spray booth out of plastic sheeting.Hopes this helps, just random thoughts.Be meticulously clean, blow everythng off, then do it again.Preparation is most everything.
