I do hunting leases for a living and I find all kinds of old cars and trucks. The problem is I don't have disposable income to buy them. I found one today I may have to break down and ****** up.
It's a 2 owner 79 F-150 Ranger 4x4 351 automatic. The man is 87yrs old and has owned it since 1984. He bought it for his son who is now 50, so it has been driven some. Odometer shows 14861, but the interior looks really good so I am guessing it is 114 not 214k. Only rust spot on the cab is the rear bottom of the driver's side. Motor fired right up and he hadn't cranked it in 6 months when he went and put tires on it he said. He barely found the keys. Damn nice bed on it. I am not looking for a flat bed, but whatever.
Needs: Exhaust will have to be redone. Brakes will have to be worked on.
I am not worried about painting it. I like it with some character.
He asked me $2000. I may go back to him with an offer.
Yeah sounds like a fair deal. But I'd counter at about 1500. And hope to end up at around 1800. But I still think 2k is fair. Even if he is firm. Just a word of caution check the floor pans, cab mounts, and the rear cab panel at the floor seam for rust. If that checks out then go for it.
Where are you hunting in Tn, looks like I need to go truck hunting down there, that a deal at 1800 or 2000.
That is a 400 to 600 dollar flat bed in my neck of the woods and the stuff hooked to it (the truck) is worth the rest of the amount. lol
Nice 2 owner farm rig, ck the rear suspention VERY WELL, cause that flat bed and that hay pile in the back ground could mean a 1000 to 1200 lb "round bale" has been back there waying down on it more than once??
Just don't rush it ... Haste makes waste but think on what you want it for or what you plan for it. Like me I know my brother is a great welder so since I need to replace floor pan it'll be cheap. Lmc has the part for 80.00 give or take. But yeah still nice find. No matter what you will always find things to needing fixing but biggest part is budget and what needs to be done. But still nice find
Ya know that is one thing I often times see repeated on here. That is that everyone seems to constantly refer to places like LMC, Dennis Carpenter, Bronco Graveyard, NPD and others alike. And while they are good sources and some are sponsors, you might want to shop around your local area for a lot of reproduction parts. There usually are suppliers that can supply a lot of these parts from many of the same companies for less. And also save the cost of shipping. Also don't hesitate to shop around local swap meets and the like. Ther are great places to find rust free o.e. parts and or repop parts at a discount. Heck I've even found N.O.S parts there that don't show up on the resources of guys like numberdummy and mike0o0o0o for example. Because these parts are in private collections. What I'm trying to say is a little research and diligence can and most often times pay off.
Some people love flat beds. For a farm rig its hard to find a normal bed on these old trucks anymore. It is a solid price for 1500 considering you will end up adding 500-1000 for your piece of mind to get it road worthy.
I took into consideration it isn't tagged and that he has another 4 trucks and 2 cars. I whipped out $1200 and tried to hand it to him. He declined. No counter, just declined. I'll wait him out. He has had it for 30 years. I doubt it goes anywhere.
Funny one of you said something about the round bale. There is actually a 76 on hubs sitting 100yds from this truck with a round bale IN the bed. Rather than having a hay ring he sets the rolls in the bed of that truck. It's piled up on both sides where he has been doing it for years.
I understand that. I'd jump all over it if it was exactly what I was looking for. The flat bed throws me off for one, and knowing it hasn't been driven much the last 2 years bothers me. Big unknown.
You could always list the flatbed for sale/trade fr a regular bed. I'd go back and offer him 1500 if you have it or ask him, "what would it take realistically to buy that truck?" I would have ran you out of my yard if you offered me 800 less than my asking price...and would have no longer talked to you!..lol
