when I originally installed mine, I installed the screen on the drivers side sun visor. Only issue I had then was that the dang visor kept falling down!
I'm interested to see how this goes. I've thought about the same thing. After having this feature in my newer trucks, I find myself missing it more and more when I drive the old ones.
But I also wouldn't want it to be too tacky and take away from the class of these trucks. I thought about getting 1 screen/unit that could provide the back up cam, gps, stereo and sync system. That way it's only 1 unit/screen as opposed to multiple pieces of new technology all over the truck.
My thought was to also keep the original radio in the dash. Then build a nice custom, wood trim console to hold the screen. But this console could also have an extra compartment or two including drink holders.
I also installed the monitor on the back of the drivers side sun visor, hardwired for better picture. Helpful when backing out of parking areas with small cars around.
I haven't thought about the sun visor! I was thinking about fabbing up an aluminum plate to hold it under the dash. Im going to put a gauge pod down there anyway.
Later on when the cash flow picks up enough I will put a large touch screen head unit in the dash and wire it in there. But for now the 3.5" screen will do just fine for me.
I'm guessing these are more useful for crew cabs, lifted trucks or folks with headache racks? I've got a standard cab with a one-piece window and can't imagine needing a backup camera; it's really easy to see out of.
0.02 is make a nice clean mount and put it right above where you normaly look when backing up, the rear view mirror.... unless the screen is to big to fit in that space??
I think the sun visor middle bracket/hdwr that mounts it above the mirror might be usefull?
I know you have already bought your unit but I was wondering if you checked into the type that have the screen in the review mirror? I'm debating on which way I want to go too.
I had to drive a rental 2012 or 13 ?? convertiable Camero (they were out of Mustangs ) but it had a rearview back up camera, I needed it with all those blind spots.
It was nice and the "hay stop stupid, you are to close to.... beeper thingie mo bob", kept me from backing into stuff.
The camera was not harmed doing 122ish across the Tampa Bay bridge, dang fast for a rental, they useually shut off at 100?
Of course I found a 4x4 shop and one big Ford truck.

The cheapest aftermarket rearview mirror with the video display was around $350, I'm scouring salvage yards to find one at a better price, I like the cleaner look. Personal choice as I don't feel the look of our era dash looks correct with a monitor but I'm not trying to rain on anyone's idea(s).
So Santa came in his big white truck today! I plan on doing the install while the truck is down for a new gas tank. So far everything looks to be of nice quality and is as good if not better than expected. The 3.5" display is just the right size in the cab of the truck. I think any bigger would be cumbersome to place. The kit seems to have enough wiring to make it into the cab through the firewall. this setup also allows for two inputs so I can install a front camera as well(the cameras alone are surprisingly cheap on Amazon).
The silver around the camera screen is brushed stainless steel and looks very nice. You cant really see it because of the camera glare.
I think somewhere around here will be a good place for the monitor. I will have to see about making some kind of a housing out of wood and painting it. That just depends on how much it bothers me being there with just the mounting bracket.
I plan on mounting the camera above the license plate on the diamond plate flange. Hopefully that will be out of harms way and give a decent field of view.
61 if you check my gallery 79 f350 the s/c with the camper I installed my camera between the visors also. it looks good out of the way but very handy. I use it to hook my boat up to hitch.
Not to hijack but your monitor idea got me searching again, I found a 5" rear view mirror monitor that I ordered ($80), I'll post how it works or if it works but the price made it worth the gamble. Please post pics of your install.
