I just had my check engine light come on. I had a friend put his scanner on for me and PO420 code came up. I have read the forums etc and see it suggests the Cat Converter or O2 sensor. I just got this vehicle about 2 weeks ago and in the book it says to use regular gas. The other day I had about a 1/4 tank and filled up with Premium gas as the stations regular pumps went down or ran out and they put the premium on same price. My question is could the premium gas affect whatever to make this code come up ? It was suggested that I run low on my gas fill up with regular, disconnect my battery to cancel the code and then see if it comes back, does this sound OK, and am I OK to keep driving with my check engine light on ? I sure don't want to wreck my new to me vehicle.
Thanks for your time,
Kathy
Since you just bought the truck, chances are high that the PO dumped it because he already had it diagnosed as needing something expensive.
Downstream O2 sensors rarely cause this error, usually it's something else. You can swap the two downstream sensors and reset the PCM, then wait to see if it codes out on the same or the other bank before spending money on $50 sensors that might or might not have any effect.
Do you have emissions testing requirements where you live? If not, there's probably not a pressing need for a resolution.
There are a number of things that could be causing this p0420 catalyst efficiency code. The most common thing is the catalytic converter itself is no longer functioning properly. The other likely thing is the rear O2 (oxygen) sensor is no longer working properly. Other things could include exhaust leaks, damaged exhaust pipes, damaged O2 sensor wiring/connectors, plugged catalytic converter, etc.
Thanks for all the input, we will try to get this figured out, hopefully not to expensive. The PO had been very good about servicing etc, truck is immaculate and seems to run really well. We have all the receipts of the work he has had done up to current, and he has had kept it well maintained. But you never know. He had just bought a new Expedition, whether he just upgraded to new or like you say he saw something expensive coming ?? It had just passed an air care that he needed where he lived, we don't need the emmissions testing done here where we live, but would still like to keep this vehicle in good shape. Thanks again everyone.

A couple interesting things here. I don't know if I am keen on the laquer thinner idea, would have to research that before ever trying it, but interesting just the same. Article was informative also. Thanks for taking the time to reply to my ??
