I was visiting my local junk yard, in search of dash parts and that jack handle wing bolt under the hood, but everything was black/gray. I spotted a King Ranch from behind and got pretty excited because it has the parchment-colored interior. I got around to the front of the truck and my heart sank... there was absolutely nothing here I could salvage. I asked about the backstory, and I learned this what happens when a Superduty locks horns with a train:
ouch! I pulled out in front of a semi once thinking I had enough room to turn into the opposite lane he was in. I will never do that again.....I made it but with only a few seconds to spare, if something would have prevented me from making it all the way across I would not be typing this right now.
The only thing that survived the wreck was the rear passenger door and the back seat. I don't think the truck was occupied - it had a 6.0L and it probably stalled, leaving the driver time to flee.
If I had a 6.0L and needed so much as a valve cover, I wasn't going to find anything of use on the engine - it was crushed. Imagine the forces involved to crush a diesel engine.
What was left of the engine tried to work its way into the cab - completely destroying anything dash-related and the front seats. The steering wheel (with beautiful leather wrap that I wanted) was bent. The passenger seat had a firewall sitting on it, I could try to rescue the nice leather grab handles on the passenger A pillar and the rear... but the driver-side handle was bent 90 degrees back.
What spooked me was the rear was cut out (behind the driver rear wheel). That's the kind of cutting the fire department does... I don't want to imagine what happened behind and under the truck when a train hit it.
The truck looked like it was wedged between the train and something else really big, like a semi - it's folded like an orange rind.
