351W to 300-6 Swap - E4OD TC Question
I am in the process of putting together a 1994 F250. It was a factory 351W/ZF5/Sterling 10.25 truck with 4.10s. The previous owner pulled the engine and transmission to put in his own truck, so obviously I received this truck with neither. I picked up a 1992 300-6 from a Bronco, and for a transmission, the truck's previous owner gave me his E4OD that the ZF replaced. His truck originally had a 351W as well so the E4OD's bellhousing is correct for my 300.
The problem I have is whether or not the 351 torque convertor will work behind the 300. I read in one place online (can't remember where) that the 300 spec convertor stalls lower than the 351 version. The site claimed just under 1500RPM for the 300 and 2100RPM for the 351. With 4.10s, I will probably be seeing the 2K range often, but I am not sure if it will hurt the low end pulling power. It is going to be used to pull a stock trailer or horse trailer, in addition to picking up hay and other ranch work.
If not, I may have access to a 302 spec convertor, but I don't know anything about its history. It was behind a blown engine so that may be a red flag already.

Here's my 2c, go find yourself another 5.8/5-speed combo to swap in. Putting a 4.9 in this truck requires different frame perches which are riveted on the cross member, different engine mounts, a different rad and hoses, a 4.9 specific flywheel or flexplate, and an 4.9 specific engine wiring harness and PCM from another '94 truck.. there are no guarantees a harness from any other year will work. And if you want to use that E4OD you also need the transmission harness which is not plug and play.. it has to be spliced in because this truck never came with that trans, and of course a 4.9/E4OD specific PCM. The TC doesn't matter the one in the trans will work, yes it may be slightly higher stall although I don't know why.. the 5.8 make more lowend torque than the old farm tractor motor, but this is Ford so I wouldn't be surprised either.
