Notice the left wheels are the ones loosening. If the lug nuts are not securely tightened they will loosen and come off. This is due to the counter clockwise rotation of the wheel. Right side wheels have the opposite effect.
Chrysler Corporation cars in the early fifties had left hand thread on the left side of their cars and right hand to eliminate this problem.
I lost a mobile home wheel (left side) that was not properly tightened at the factory due to this effect.
Bottom line; give the left side a little extra oomph!

Good point!
I know that chrysler did this to cars in the 1960s and 70s as well, and only in the drivers side rear... We had a 1968 chrysler newport and currently have a 1967 dodge charger, they are both this way
Well whatever the reason, it sucked. :P I'm getting in the habit of checking them once a week at least. I'm just glad no studs broke when it happened, it needs to hold up a little longer till my other truck is done.
If you've run the truck with those wheels for quite some time with no issues, Id suspect foul play. If the wheels were a recent addition, Id check to make sure the wheel fully seats against the hub like it should. Ive seen this issue on dual wheels before that the center hole was just a hair too small and the wheels wouldn't tighten fully against the hub. just enough space behind them that the wheels could start "walking' and the lugs wouldn't stay tight for any amount of torque. Either way............."sucks to be you" right now.........sorry for your misfortune........and if it is a matter of A**hole neighbors, I think a 12ga. is the best way to keep it from happening again! Wait up for em and catch em in the act......all ya need to do is jack a shell in a pump shotgun and I think they'll get the point!

Yup IT WORKS . I have pointed a few guns at people over the years .Even fired a few rounds . The One thing a criminal listens to ... the sound of a round racking in a shotgun ! Brown stripes appear most every time
I wonder if you should be using a flat washer type lug nut for your aluminum rims instead of a tapered one?
I bought aluminum rims on Saturday and the guy at the tire store told me to buy new lug nuts. The tapered, when tightened, will dig into the aluminum causing them to gap and possibly loosen
