I have a 1982 inline 6 300. It has really bad oil blow by. i know it could be piston rings but it never burns oil or blow smoke it just blows it out of the crankcase. i am thinking maybe a vaccum problem. i do know that the pcv valve just sits in the valve cover it doesnt screw in and there is no rubber seal. i want to know what everyone says cause i would really like to get this fixed. the truck has 369 000 miles and has been rebuilt twice
Ok, if the PCV valve isn't seated, whereas it has a seal, then it really isn't doing anything. Get a NEW grommet for the valve cover and new PCV valve. Check the emission hose its connected to for any obstructions. Once resealed, and vacuum connected, see if that'll do it.
On a side note...
I'd had a similar problem with a worn out 302. It was so bad, I ran hoses from both valve covers as road draft tubes. Switched to Non-detergent oil for awhile and then ran Walmarts Accel 10w-40, SF rating oil. Did that for maybe 3000+ miles and then eliminated the road draft tubes and Installed an oil catch can between PCV and intake and virtually eliminated blow-by. Granted this was a roller cam, so ZDDP wasn't a real issue nor crank cuz it was all trashed. It ran with maybe 7psi oil psi, HOT idle, if that. if your running any API SN rated oil, its high in detergent and it may just need to switch to the above. I have been rather pleased with the Accel oil and also Walmart sells a straight 30 wt, 2-gallon container, that is API SH approved. That for the money is a good start.
Now, hopefully I won't get flamed since I may have just opened a can of worms with my topic on Engine oil.
Thanks man i reallly apreciate the help i ment to ad in the post that there is pleny of oil pressure when the motor is cold but when it gets warm.it drops. I was able to get a compression test and im about to check it.
That engine was abused severely. Found metal from cam bearings and crank. Rods were good.
I couldn't even see the spider tray for the roller lifters it was so badly gunked and like tar. I only wish people could have seen this inside.
Tore it down completely, still in the truck, power washed the heads, the block, under the pistons. Rolled in all new bearings, heads reworked. Blowby was probably my fault from washing and cleaning carbon from the rings, but it did finally stop puking oil from the air filter box. Geez it was terrible!
Congratulations! Your Just like me. I have no issues except the blow by. At high rpms, high way speeds, it tends to blow more and or use the oil.
Put a new spark plug in that cylinder and check it occasionally to see if it's being fowled out by the oil.
This is ghetto rigging, but take any steel spray can, carb cleaner, punch a hole in it big enough to fit your vacuum line coming out of your breather, and stuff in there. Then set it on your intake manifold and your good. This will catch the oil, so it doesn't cover your engine bay, kill your air cleaner, and leave a smoke trail. If your like me and waiting a month to park it and rebuild it, just dump that nasty oil back in when it gets full, or fill your oil up every time you fill your gas up.
I'm rebuilding my motor because of this. I've put well into 8k on it, in this condition, and have had no issues related to it.
However, I don't recommend it, rebuild is needed yesterday.
I know it completly blows my mind that it blows so much oil but never burns it. im almost thinking that it may be a stuck ring in the groove of the piston
