Recently my 2000 Excursion started having inconsistent throttle response when I would barley press the throttle or while cruising with light pedal. After some research on the diesel forums most people said it could be your TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) going bad and that you should replace it. If you have the TPS part# F4SZ-9B989-AA or DY-967 my fix could work for you.
I took the sensor apart and noticed that the plastic seemed to be worn just a little from the metal gear turning back and fourth. Just wrap the little metal piece that turns the TPS with some tin foil and bolt it back together. Its been 2 weeks now and my throttle works great with no issues at all.
Since it is metal contacting plastic when you press the accelerator pedal, I think this could be a very common cause of a jerky throttle. It's definitely worth a try and if it works, you now have a few extra bucks in your pocket.
It would't do anything for you if you shrink wrapped the Plastic, as for the metal piece I think the shrink wrap may be to thick but I didn't really consider that option. I only wraped 5 revolutions around the metal with the tinfoil so not much but it made a huge difference.
