"Floyd" has a 239 V8. I removed the long bolts that go through the timing gear cover (and the mounting brackets for the generator). The lower ones were wet. It seems like water on them (definitely not oil). Is this an indication of a problem?
Also, I removed the bolts on the upper right side to mount brackets for the power steering pump. Do they have/need some kind of sealer on them? They are about 3" long and about an inch of the threads have something on them but can't tell if it is a sealer or some type of anti seize material.
If the bolts go into a water jacket , or an area with oil . sealant should be applied to the threads . Liquid thread sealer is good .Many makes , Permatex Ultra Black works good also .

How do I tell if they do go into the water jacket? Would that be why they are wet?

If coolant is present . the bolt likely goes into a coolant passage . If Oil is present , an oil passage , chamber , is present . Either case requires sealant to the bolt threads , Permatex makes some great products . #2 and others .
