I asked about my hard brakes. and someone mentioned a vacuum reservoir. I don't have one. is there suppose to be? anyone have a diagram? well while typing this I remember I swapped a auto to a manual trans. is there a vacuum line running to the factory auto? if there is It might be loosing vacuum through that line correct?
No. The factory auto would have been an E4OD so no vacuum to it.
There is a vacuum pump, if you have a serpentine belt it should be on the top left of the engine, if you have vee belts it's below the alternator and driven by it's own belt off the alternator. I'm not sure about a vacuum reservoir, I have seen those on PSDs with an electric pump and on gassers, but I don't think I have seen one on an IDI. The vacuum is not dependent on throttle, the pump is always turning when the engine is turning.
If you follow the line back from the brake booster, you will find a place where the line has a small hose coming off for the climate control stuff in the cab. Pull this line, attach a mityvac or similar vacuum tool with a gauge, and start the engine. If the gauge reads 20+" vacuum, the pump is working, if not the pump is weak or not working. Report back the results and we can give you the next step.
My '88 had a vacuum reservoir, it was on the drivers side fender and looked exactly like a coffee can. And by that I mean it WAS a coffee can with both sides sealed up and two hose fittings. One came from the vac pump and I think had a check valve built into the fitting the other went to the cruise control thingy. There is also a metal bracket one the side that has two bolts coming out of it that holds it to the fender well. It had been replaced by a PO because it was very new looking and not actually bolted down. The bracket off the original is still attached to the fender, although rather rusted which hints at what happened to the original reservoir. While swapping to hydroboost, I pulled the reservoir out since it wasn't needed anyways, while the cruise control thingy was there, there's no controls for it on the wheel.
However, the '93 I picked up with serpentine belts doesn't seem to have the reservoir. It does however have cruise control, but I think a different design. So maybe Ford changed the design and no longer needed the vac reservoir?
