Still Trouble Shooting

I rebuilt the carb (thanks for the part #) and the truck is running much smoother when I pump the gas pedal. It still stumbles and dies if it isn't given at least a little throttle bump.

Findings on the carb rebuild: The check ball was missing, fuel delivery ports were gummed up but not totally plugged, & the choke was not rotated in a postion that it would open the blade once up to temp. Other than that it wasn't bad.

Current Carb settings: Idle screws are 4 turns out and not hardly even on the tension spring. I have the throttle linkage set so that the arm is always pressing on the pump tab a bit. Finally, I need to bend the metal tab down float to lower the its position because gas is seeping out of the top gasket.

Any advice why this thing will not idle on its own when my foot is totally off the gas? I tried adjusting the timing a bit but that didnt seem to make any change.

Thanks

sounds like a lean condition. Plug off the pvc line on the back of carb. give it about a 3/4 open choke turn the idel screw in until it will stay running. check for air leaks around the intake manifold carb shaft and any vacume lines if it all checks good check fuel pressure then go thru carb again.

Need to know which carb and engine you are working on.
Sounds like you may just have a couple things out of adjustment or a vacuum leak.

Not familiar w/ the 2100 Series Auto-Lite/Motorcraft 2V Carburetor but it seems to me 4 turns on the idle mixture is too much, I usually start at around 1 to 1 1/2 turns and lean out from there?? I agree w/ Scott, vac. leak or an adjustment issue? What is the timing set at, and in setting believe the vac. advance has to be plugged, find golf tee's work great. Finally, a change in timing, or idle mixture one should go back and readjust the other. Anyhow, food for thought?

If you have gas leaking out of the top, then your float and seat are not adjusted or installed properly. Check your float adjustment. It should be from 0.435" to 0.465" from the top of the main body. Make certain that the needle and float work together. Also check your float for damage. Good luck.

1st things 1st,thank you for responding. Tuesday morning when I get off work, I will do the float adjustment and set the idle screws to 3 turns from seat.
2nd I will plug the PCV line at the back of the carb and set the choke to 3/4 open. Hopefully I can simply adjust the idle screws and be okay.

If that doesn't help, I will check the vacuum lines and spray some carb cleaner around the base of the carb to leak check that too.

FYI: Its a smooth running 352 w/ Motorcraft 2100 2 barrel. It just wont idle for me.

You might want to pick up a can of brake cleaner instead of using the carb cleaner. Carb cleaner can mess up the paint on the intake or leave marks on an aluminum intake. Spray bottle with water in it works... Just a thought.

How's the weather up there on the mountain Dave. Wonderful place to live.
Dave, you might be thinking about the 4100 series.

Yes, been sooo long since I have worked on 2bbl that I tend to forget there's quite abit of difference between the 2100, and the 4100 series. Thank you for reminding me!!

Yes, as you are probably aware, living among the redwoods can be pleasant. So far it has been a mild winter, 15" of rain to date compared to the 32" plus about this time of year in the past. I have enjoyed the mild winter, temperatures running in the mid 70's and no hunkering down, besides these ole bones function better in the heat. Again, thanks for the heads-up, hopefully I have not gotten Rustyoldford too confused.
