Looking for suggestions on what kind of fuel filter to buy for my son's truck. It is a 79 F150 with a 351m. We just rebuilt the aftermarket 4 Barrel Carter Carb and added an electric choke. What is on it now is definitely not stock, it is an inline fuel filter. Do i need high flow or low flow. I don't want to restrict the fuel to the carb.
A 351M shouldn't have a Carter carb unless you mean it has an aftermarket 4-barrel intake with an early (pre-Edelbrock) Carter. Nonetheless, just get whatever is specified in the book at the parts store. If you have the stock Motorcraft 2-barrel, it's a threaded filter. For standard brands like Wix and Purolator, they're not even going to ask about flow rate. Pretty simple job.
A standard in line filter in the same size as the carb supply line should work fine. Not too much restriction. I prefer the metal case type but any standard filter should work.
One thing to consider is fuel pressure. An OE pump will put out 7-9 psi. Sometimes that is too much for a Carter and will flood it. If the carb and fuel pump have worked well as a pair before there should be no problem. If not, you may need a fuel pressure regulator. Holly is best (Summit ect.). I believe Carters like around 5 psi.
