check your differential / transfer case fluids!!
i moved to the front differential and pulled the plug. fluid dripped out, it was yellow in color, but ive read its normal from the assembly lube ford uses when installing the gears.
i then pulled the plug to the transfer case. nothing came out of the fill plug, so i stuck my finger in and still no fluid. i didn't have any of the magic xl-12 fluid ford calls for but i did have some mobil 1 synthetic atf so i topped it off with that. it was about 8 oz low.
i move to the rear diff and pull the plug.... no fluid comes out so i go and get a bottle of mobil 1 75w140 to top it off.... i added ALMOST A WHOLE QUART to bring the level just to the bottom of the fill plug. i couldnt believe that it was under filled that much!!
just thought ive give the heads up to anyone who hasn't checked their diff oils.. i know i wouldn't want to be towing during the summer with a rear that was nearly a quart low on oil
I went through this exact same thing with my wife's minivan last November. The factory underfilled the rear diff causing it to fail 10,000 miles out of warranty. I always thought modern quality control was better than that. Guess not!
I've already had my rear end apart twice, and it'll be happening again this summer, so I'm not touching it. Will definitely check the T-case though!
