Alright so i picked up an 89 bronco ii last weekend (cheap) knew the head gasket was blown. Ive done gasket replacements on all of my 3500 chev diesels. Ever had these troubles. The Passenger side cylinder head came off with out a hitch, as did the manifold bolts. All 6 bolts holding the exhaust manifold to the drivers side head are either corroded beyond recognition or seem to be welded into place. No amount of penetrating oil or heating up will loosen them. So then i figured just dis-connect the exhaust manifold from the exhaust pipe. I broke my breaker bar, craftsman socket, and wrist. the bolts didn't move at all. I just wanna get this little pig running again, has anybody had this problem before or know any tricks to get it either the manifold off the head or pipe from manifold? Much appreciated,
Thanks
Dan
Years ago my '88 2.9L clogged the cat which heated the exhaust to a bright red and blew a hole in the side of the manifold. Needless to say those manifold bolts were pretty much welded in. Granted it was a worst case scenario in my case but we ended up having to drill and tap all those bolt holes. Removing the plastic fender shrouds is an easy task and will give you significantly more space to work. I hope at least a few of those bolts un-thread for you.
Time to get out the blue wrench and hope for the best . An impact would be nice also . Be prepared to drill and tap broken bolts and studs ...
For your convenience, the thread for these bolts is M8x1.25.........You will need to know this because many will snap off and need to be tapped or heli-coiled.......replace with grade 8 un-plated bolts.
Well found out the block was cracked so now a 4.0 is going in. All other parts of the 2.9 are fine so if you want them go to my other thread and leave a comment
