Why be common, a Dodge or Ford diesel swap in a old Ford is all the new rage. Mind you, I have NO issues with folks that undertake the endeavor.

How about a Caterpillar or a other odd, rare or non common swap. Dare to be different and go the furthest out on the limb.
Haha, ok

About the engine swap, I have actually kicked that idea around a little but, as of right now, my fabrication skills are pretty much non-existent so swapping in a less common engine would be awesome and something I'd like to do but not a very viable option. That's why I was thinking along the 5.9 or 6.9 routes because like you said, everyone has done them so it would be a lot easier for me to figure it out, as well as all the support for either of them i.e. they're everywhere so it's easy to get parts and help figuring anything out with them. Now, you must consider that almost everything I know about trucks is just stuff I've either picked up listening to other people or learned myself by either reading or actual experience, so, while I consider myself capable of doing much of the work involved in a swap, I'd still need a bit of help from someone who actually knows what they're doing. I am considering going to a diesel tech school within the next couple of years and taking as many shop classes at our community college as I can afford so maybe by the time I'm ready for the swap I'll have enough knowledge to do something different like a Caterpillar or Deere swap. I'm not at all trying to say I disagree with you on them, I like to be different than the rest and think it would be really awesome to make my truck unique, so thanks for the idea

Ck this thread out to get all the what's what, and ck out this guys fab/mod skills, awesome!

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...il-burner.html

Even though there are or might be swap kits of some sort? There is still some higher level of capabilities needed.

Always good to know your capabilities, before undertaking such a task like this.

Tools, time, space and $ are always a factor too. In my case I do not have enough of any......but I have tons of ideas.

Well drat! There goes my time for my college homework for the day! jk, But thanks for the link! looks like a great thread

I agree, I didn't mean to sound like I thought a Cummins or IDI swap would be anything like easy, I just meant that there's dozens of threads about doing them and plenty of info out there to get a novice like me out of trouble if I need help. I also agree on the tools time & space thing, not enough of any. I'm working in my folks driveway with a rather pathetic collection of tools that all together fit in a large Tupperware But it's still fun as heck!

I spend a ton of time in my local chapter, we have a monthly chat/bs thread, a local WTB/WTS-S (wanted to sale-swap), a few build threads and we all keep tabs on each other.

I have made a good # of friends, sold a ton of parts, and get extra wrench hands all the time. Even got a great deal on getting my red truck painted....

Gettin' stuff done I noticed a bit of a tapping in what sounded like either the No.1 or 2 upper cylinder area going on a few days ago and thought it might be something like a lifter. Got in there today and started looking hard around the area of the noise and noticed the exhaust manifold gasket had some pretty shady looking spots so I figured I'd try replacing that before diving into the valve train. Turns out both gaskets were shot and now almost all of the tapping is gone, though I can still hear a slight tapping sound going on still but that might just be normal, I had a couple friends listen for it and they said they can't here anything. Might also be be the down pipe to manifold gaskets. Then I've just been doing some other stuff trying to get her nice and cleaned up.

Came up with these temporary plug wire holders

Thanks man! The whole concept isn't entirely mine, but I'm also gonna make a few little metal tabs to secure the ties to the valve cover bolts, should help a lot with keeping the bay organized then I gotta start re-wiring some of the under-hood stuff

Does yours have a filler neck that protrudes into the wheel well?
My tank is 21ish gallons according to the PO, kinda small but I'm either gonna run a dual setup for gas/propane or just save up and throw in a diesel at some point, if I go propane that'll give me an extra 10 gallons or so and if I go diesel I'll just put in a new larger tank.
Here's what my filler hose looks like right now, it comes up before the wheel well, it's pretty jacked up and takes forever to fill the tank, I gotta think up a better way to run the hose. I'll try and get a pic up soon that shows it's location a bit better.

See about a getting a regular exposed cap filler fill neck, it might have a better angle or just adding a metal extension to the top part of the one you have.

That might work, thanks. It'll be a while before I take care of it though, but I'll post up whatever I rig up.

Did you "steal" that trick from Hot Rod magazine circa 1983? lol
Haha, close! It was off of a Roadkill episode from Motor Trend's youtube channel, David Freiburger from Hot Rod magazine used the trick while they were messing around and I thought I'd take the idea and run with it Mine are gonna be a bit better though

That would be awesome! I figure it's gonna be at least a month though before mine is anything close to being ready to drive that far without me worrying about it I've heard there's some pretty good wheelin' places close to Polson though so I'm definitely game to meet up some time
