1999 F250 Super Duty 2WD V10.
Wheel in front on passenger side of truck gets hot. I pulled the wheel and the bearings, rotor and brakes look good. Any ideas how to fix

Replace the soft brake line. If its collapsing internally it can act as a one way valve holding brake fluid pressure and not allowing it to release when you lift your foot off the brake pedal. In fact its a good idea to replace all of them then bleed the whole system. Brake fluid absorbs water. Brake fluid should be bled bi-annually or 50K.

what gets hot, the wheel or the rotor?
sticking pistons in the calipers is a common problem.

It all gets hot. Use your nose too it will tell you which sides hot. I've seen this problem melt tires off their beads, melt caliper piston & slider seals and melt axle seals and catch on fire from igniting the axle grease. Catastrophic failures such as these are generally on a big rig trailer if the drivers a beginner or not paying attention to his/her rig.

yes it all gets hot, but some things get hotter than others.
i had a caliper lock up on me. the rotor was 998 degrees measured three inches away through the rim holes with an infrared thermometer.
the rim was warm, around 150 degrees.

The wheel was hot but when I pulled the wheel the next day the rotor, brakes and caliper was fine not sticking, no scorch marks. I then pulled it all the way down to the spindle and checked both bearings and races all were fine.
I am stumped as to what is causing it to heat up. As to the amount of heat it was hot to the touch but not burn your hand hot.

This is a tell-tale sign of a collapsed inner wall of the soft brake line. It will release just not quick enough to prevent drag. Stand on the brakes with a buddy by the suspect wheel, off the ground of course. Have him try to spin the wheel immediately after you release the brake. Ill bet i hangs up for while after release.

Thanks it all kind of makes sense now. I live in WI and hitting deer in fall and winter is a big problem. Well I hit one hard enough this winter that the whole front end needed to be replaced including the fender on the passenger side. I am thinking that could have been the start of the problem. I will buy a set today and change them out.

a sticking caliper will do the same thing.
as you drive the brakes drag heating up the rotor.
as the rotor heats up it expands. this makes the brakes drag even more.
when you let it sit, the rotor cools off and shrinks releasing the brakes.
i have replaced 7 calipers on my 02 over the past 6 years.
all the soft lines are still fine.
in 35 years i have only replaces 3 or 4 soft lines due to inner liner collapse. 99.99% of the time dragging brakes is because of bad calipers.

Agreed. All the ones I have had brake problems with have been because of bad calipers.

Rubber brake lines are consumable parts just like belts and hoses. I would start with the line and work your way out. If it was not the line, than you have still made a good investment in your safety.

Yes Sir for sure. If you get to the 200K mark and havent replaced the soft lines you could be on borrowed time. You wont see it until you have a panic stop, when you need it most. Of course there isnt any good rule of thumb. Ive seen failure in less miles. Some one may have change brakes and either dropped the caliper or let the caliper hang from the line. Both will stress the hell out of the line prematurely. Visual inspection is a good start. If you see them starting to dry out and crack its time. And for god sake stay clear of offshore lines.

Glad you got it fixed . I never would have thought that was the problem either because I have never had to replace them on any vehicle I have owned.

agreed. while i have heard of soft lines collapsing, i have never experienced it.
the lines on all my vehicles are still in perfect shape.from the 04 F-350 to the 79's and the 65 falcon. the 66 7 litre had the soft lines changed before i got it when they replaced the hard lines
