all the "re manufactured" steering gears I have installed, from autozone, o rielys, napa, ford, dodge, chevy and rock auto were all "re manufactured" by ATSCO. their idea of re manufacture is seals and paint. they do not replace shafts or bearings.
on my old service truck I tried 5 boxes and none of them were as good as the one I removed. I finally gave up and a few months later upgraded my service truck to a PSD.

Also don't forget to check the steering shaft where it telescopes between the fire wall and the steering gear box, I have seen those loose and cause steering wander.

What do you mean by "upgraded my service to a PSD"?

The only accronym that seems to fits for PSD is "power stroke diesel." So, what exactly did you do to upgrade your power steering after the 5 steering box failures?

Well, after searching around a bit I did find a few comments suggesting that Redhead's aren't any better than off-the-shelf steering boxes but the majority of the comments still seem to favor the Redhead over standard reconditioned boxes by a wide margin.

upgraded my service truck to a psd! I had an '89 gas rig with a 460. it automatically stopped at every gas station.
my service truck is now a '99 psd.

Ok, I think I've got it.

You had 5 steering box failures in your gas rig but apparently didn't do anything specifically to try to fix the steering box problem before switching to a diesel rig.

I would argue that the Red-Head is made better so it will last longer, but I have no hard evidence to back up my opinion.

That said, if money isn't an issue, and I had a bad steering box, I'd opt for a Red Head over anything else first.

...and at least one person who claimed that he had a Redhead fail on him.
I can point you to a thread that documented very well a failed Red-Head steering box. It's mechanical. It can fail. Nothing is perfect and has a zero failure rate.

But, the majority of the comments still seem to favor the Redhead over standard reconditioned boxes by a wide margin.
Red-Head has an excellent reputation for providing quality parts.

I don't know if this is still true but the last time ( probably over a year ago) I was on the redhead site they had a pretty detailed description of what was involved on their remanufacture process. Not only do they renew/replace ALL wear items then do some "custom" work to address weak points in the original design. When you by a parts house box it is "remanufactured" as cheaply and quickly as possible. Redhead pays very close attention to the quality of everything they put out and actually takes pride in the work they do and that is why they have the reputation they do. If they sucked you would hear about it.
