Hello Blue Oval Family. I have a 66 F 100 Was a 6 now an 8 cyl. My question, Is there an adjustment on the steering box to get rid of some of this steering play? My rag joint looks good, ball joints, tie rod ends are tight but I have about 3 inches of slop in the wheel. Any suggestions? Yea I know its fun to drive and all part of the experience but add the non power steering, sloppy shifter, bouncy seat, non power drums and keeping it running by pumping the gas like i have epilepsy in my foot makes it a real workout. I have really toned up my arms , legs and sphincter muscles.
Try turning in the screw on the box. Loosen the nut and turn the screw in a half-turn. If it helps, try a little more. Too much will create more problems. Remember where the screw was before you touched it!

Are you sure all parts are tight. My 64 straight axle looked tight except for a little give in the drag link. New tie rod end and a drag link (and manual alignment) made a big difference. King Pins looked tight with some give. The new ones made a noticeable difference. The truck drive great. still wanders on it own a little due the loose steering box.
I have a 1/4-1/2 of play at the steering box and 5-6 inches at the wheel. The long term answer is to rebuild the steering box. I am calling the guys at the link below next week to see when they can do mine. $140 for the basic rebuild. I live in San Antonio so shipping is a drive across town. They have shipping instructions. http://www.stangerssite.com/rebuildingindex.html
If you are going to keep the truck, look at it as an investment in safety and comfort.
You might want to crawl under and look at the parts while the wheel it turned to the left & right. The steering wheel only needs to be turned a couple inches each way. First look at the pit arm and make sure it moves when the steering wheel moves. Then check the tie rod ends. The ends may look ok if you just wiggle them but with the tires on the ground - turning the steering wheel will put load on the ends.
Anyway, if your steering box is loose, I'd question if there is grease in it or maybe the p/o was messing with it. Remember - 'grease', not 90 weight oil.
