Changing the computer will not effect the base timing. Did you unplug the SPOUT when you checked and adjusted the timing?

If you really have a 5.8L engine that PCM will not be very happy.

Yea base timing is set with spout removed so computer has nothing to do with it, if base timing is changing it is different each time you put a light on it? then something else is wrong. Say for example the outer ring on dampener is slipping.

Plus one on the 302 computer running a 351 aspect too, both computers use timing and fuel curves based on each engines total volume, each engine's "volumetric efficiency" how much air moves through and at any given rpm.

At minimum a 351 running on a 302 computer would very likely result in lean condition, one it'd likely continually need fight to overcome especially in the upper rpm ranges.

Wrong computer or not where you able to run the self test and get a proper reply at any point?

You should at a minimum get "system pass" codes as a result.

If you couldn't with the original computer and now can not with the "good" replacement computer you have other underlying issues yet need addressed.

I am pretty sure that is an OBD-II PCM. Swapping that in is a lot bigger project than you probably want to deal with.
