im going to be replacing my fuel pumps, 1990 f150 4X4. ive been looking at fuel pumps and want to know how they hook to the pickup and return tubes. the pumps ive looked at are just the pump itself, a big plastic section, with two wires coming out of it. does it just plug into the pickup and return tubes. do i re-use my old sending unit. thanks
You have 3 all together if you have dual tanks. There is a low pressure pump in each tank. They can be removed from the sending unit and replaced. Just make sure that you don't wire them backwards. The main pump is on the frame under the drivers seat. It is just in a bracket and is also fairly easy to replace.
If you only have 1 tank, then you should only have one high pressure pump in the tank. It is also replacable and is in the sending unit housing.

The '90 probably has the hi-pressure in-tank pumps and no pump on the frame rail, but it doesn't really matter.
The in-tank pump is held onto the pickup tube by hose clamps on a rubber hose. It's inside a large plastic reservoir with the level sender screwed to the metal frame outside.
