I have a severe fuel delivery problem. My truck starts and will idle for 20 seconds and dies. Dies if the accelerator is touched. I connected a one gallon gas can to the fuel pump intake and the engine ran perfectly. Blew out the fuel line from the pump to the tank - no obstructions. Connected the truck fuel tank back up and problem returned. Is there a pickup tube inside the tank that could have fallen off ?
thanks
Look at your fuel pump...is there what appears to be a tomato can with serrated edges on top? There's a fuel filter inside that can. Most ppl don't even know it's there, and it never gets changed. Sooner or later, it will clog up. Take care when unscrewing the can, it's prolly stuck on.
The pickup tube inside the tank (it can't fall off) has a plastic screen. It's prolly clogged up. While you are in there, also replace the gas tank sender float.
You didn't mention the engine size, but if it's a V8, it'll prolly has a 2V carburetor. On the front of the carb., there's a squarish plate with a lever, held on by four bolts. Behind the plate is the accelerator pump diaphram and acc. pump check valve. These are known to be a weak link in the system. When the diaphram fails, the truck will idle OK, but the minute the gas is applied, the engine will stumble (and die on occasion). Take care when removing the old diaphram, there is a coil spring behind it.
Thanks and I think the tank clog is likely. The carb is a brand new Edelbrock Performer 600 on a 390. I've got good pressure coming out of the fuel pump (about 6.5 lbs). The sender is new but I didn't pull the filter out of the tank. I cleaned the tank but neglected to look at the pickup tube.
