Hi All,
I just replaced my left rear tire because it seemed to be the culprit of that pulsating tire noise that these Escapes love to produce. Problem is, the tire has great tread on it but the inside tread (tread closest to axle) was almost worn to the cord.
Does it sound like I have a camber adjustment to make or is it something else that is characteristic of this vehicle?
I don't want to ruin a brand new tire.
Thanks in advance.
Yes, you most likely have a camber problem. If the top of the tire/wheel is tilted in more than a small amount, the camber is likely too much. Most have a slight amount of camber, but not a lot. Camber could cause wear on the inner or outer edge of the tire depending on whether the camber was negative or positive. Compare the tilt of your rear wheels to each other and to a sample you find in a parking lot. If your tires wore out quickly, I'd get it checked by an alignment shop. It is possible there is a mechanical problem causing excess camber.
If the outer edges of the tread 'blocks' do not have a feather, then you very likely have a camber problem. If the tread had feathered edges, that means that the tire is being swiped sideways a bit while going down the road, causing the tread to wear on the inner edge of each block. That problem is caused by excessive toe in or toe out.
If you had a toe problem it would add more wear to a camber problem.
Ok, thanks Tom! From what I saw of the used tire yesterday, there was pretty smooth wear with no feathering. I don't know much of the history of this suspension as I just purchased this Escape 3 months ago. I think the inspection station did me a favor (or not ) when I bought it because everything including the suspension and that tire passed. I was surprised the tire did even though it had deep groove tread left but about an inch of the inner part was almost worn smooth.
