There's only one way to change them---from underneath looking up.
If you're lucky enough to have a lift that allows standing underneath that'd be great. I'm pretty sure most of us doing this in our driveways though don't have that luxury.
I do hope you've made arrangements to capture any residual refrigerant?
Yes on the recovery. No on the lift. Ive been under to disconnect the plug its s nightmare. Do you remove the radiator or anything else to make access more easier?
OMG no---there are like four bolts holding the compressor to the engine block---once the serpentine belt is removed it should drop right on your head.
If the electrical plug is being stubborn gently warm it with a heat gun--GENTLY I say. Once its warm, not blazing hot, press it together then push the lock pins in and it should pop apart with a small amount of tugging.
DON'T get overly enthusiastic with the chassis side wiring harness connector---those cost upwards of $35 each to replace. Also use a dab of dielectric grease inside the connector before reconnecting---makes for a better water resistant connection.
Replace the orifice and serpentine belt too---if the budget allows consider replacing the tensioner too. Additionally make sure the new compressor is properly charged with the proper oil---a vital step.
