I have a 1980 F100 three-on-the-tree that is having issues running. It will start just fine, but for some reason it keeps cutting off on me, and doesn't always start back up. After it sits for a few minutes it usually starts back up but 30 seconds later or even 30 minutes it'll cut off again. It can happen anytime, braking, shifting, accelerating and idling. Ive gone through and taken apart the carb and.cleaned it, but did not rebuild it bc the kit I bought was wrong. Can it be the fuel lines? Maybe something to do with the ignition? I replaced the distributor/plugs/wires last spring and cleaned them up last month, but Im stumped on this. Can anyone help?
The 1980 has a Duraspark ignition module mounted on the driver side inner fender. When these go bad, often times they will act as you have described. Take the module to a parts store and it can be tested, however, sometimes they will indicate OK, when cool, but act up when they heat up.
If you know someone with an older Ford or Mercury [~1975-1983], you could swap the module and see.
If you find out that it is defective, it is recommended to get Motorcraft if possible. Some of the newer "off shore manufactured" modules do not have a good reputation for longivity.
By the way, scroll down the list of forums and you will find one specific for the 4.9L and 300 six cylinders. They, too, will be happy to assist you.
Thank you for the quick reply. I'm at work right now but I will find out if that is the problem. Is it possible to be something else? The other day when I was trying to crank it, it was refusing to start so I played with the throttle myself and when I sat back in the cab it started on its own...just trying to be thorough.
If you don't have a spare module laying around, do yourself a favor and check for spark at the spark plug. If you have spark, then your problem is fuel.

You might want to try replacing your coil. When they go bad, heat and cold can make them fail intermittently. I've had this kind of problem with all kinds of vehicles and it can make you crazy if you don't know it's the problem.
I agree to do some actual diagnosis on it... when it dies, check for spark and fuel, proceed based on the results... the ignition module is a common culprit and can be checked at an auto parts store.
What's the part number on the ICM? I don't want to get the wrong one. I know the truck has spark. It turns over just fine and when it does run there's no miss firing or anything of the sort. Could it be the fuel lines being clogged? There's nothing in the fuel filters and I have two on there, one before the pump and one after.
It has spark when it runs, you need to check for spark when it dies.... don't just take guesses as to what it could be, do some diagnosis to see what it is.
I got it fixed guys. It was the ignition control unit. It failed the low rpm test when I hooked it up at the parts store. Replaced it and now the truck is running perfect. Thanks for the help.
