I need some advise as to what is going on. 2005 Mazda Trib. will not let me shift out of park . It doesn't happen all the time button seems to be sticking . Is it the button or the electrical switch on the brake pedal ? This belongs to a friend of mine and this is the info I'm getting . Any thought?
The switch operated by the brake pedal energizes a solenoid to move a plastic piece which unlocks the shift linkage. To figure out which is the problem, you would have to know if power is getting to the solenoid each time you push the pedal, and if the solenoid is moving the piece that locks the linkage. If the lock moves out of the way each time, you have a button/linkage problem.
You can access the locking bits by removing the plastic surrounding the shift lever. Most of it snaps in place, but I cannot tell you exactly what to do to remove it. I think you'll need a plastic blade, such as a drywall blade, to un-snap the pieces without damaging the appearance.
If your vehicle sits for days at a time, it is possible for the linkage to get stiff, and be difficult to move from Park. We have a T-bird that does not like to get out of Park if it sits for a few days. I have not had the problem with the Mariner.
