Jeb (Mowing Man) and I got the engine installed in my truck this week, and fired it up today. After cranking it over for a while with a cylinder firing occasionally, I decided I'd had enough of waiting for the air to make its way out of the fuel rails. I loosened the 7mm square head plugs in the fuel rails at the opposite ends of the head from the fuel supply lines, and turned the key on. Waited for the fuel pump to force the air out, then tightened to plugs up and cranked it over again. It started within probably 10 seconds of cranking after doing that, and ran fairly smooth. The plug on the front of the right head wasn't easy to get to, but I think getting the air out all at once made a big difference in the cranking time. Might be something to keep in mind if you're pulling injectors out.
Anyhow, I ran it up to operating temp and retorqued the injector hold downs. I'll finish buttoning it up tomorrow; I'm sleepy now.
Still might have to do a little diagnosis. It runs horrible when it's cold. Well, maybe not horrible, but it doesn't run well. When it was warmed up last night, it ran nicely. I'll take it out for a ride to get any remaining air out before I get too concerned about it. The engine hadn't been run in over a year before I bought it. We'll get it ironed out eventually.
Got everything put back together today and took it for a road test. There's something not quite right, but I can't put my finger on it just yet. It has a misfire under light to moderate throttle. We ran a buzz test after a 20F overnight cold soak and a couple injectors sounded somewhat muted. After warming it up and driving it 10 miles or so, a cylinder contribution test showed cylinder 8 as out of balance (I think that's what it said?).
I have a black CPS in it, all injectors are ADs, and #8 injector was not one of the ones that sounded muted during the cold buzz. For grins I ran a buzz test warm and all injectors sounded the same. I'm going to try another cold buzz tomorrow morning now that the truck has been driven and see if it's different from today's results. I'll record audio of it too.
Next time I drive it I'll also try to log ICP, IPR duty cycle, MAP, injector PW, etc. and post those up if I can. I'll also drive it another 50-75 miles and see if it improves. Hopefully, I can avoid repeated trips under the valve covers, lol.

No, it's Rotella mineral, 15w-40. I wanted to get it running before going to synthetic just in case I needed to drain it.
Didn't want to waste the expensive stuff . . .
Check the Temp on each cyclinder to see which one mitt be suspect. Glow plugs all working correctly? I know your in texas so I guess it ain't really that cold out correct?
Right now I'm in CT, and it was 6F when I woke up. An infrared thermometer has been on my list of things to get for quite some time. I guess it might be time to pull the trigger on that purchase.

It's twenty bucks. There was a time when this was an investment... but now there's no reason not to have one.

Yeah, they used to be pretty expensive. A new Harbor Freight just opened near here a month ago, so I'm going to drop in there with one of their 25% off coupons and get one.
Maybe I can do that on my way to the nearest Pep Boys (40 miles) to throw these garbage Bosch batteries through their front window. A year and a half old, and they're toast again. I'm about fed up with Pep Boys and everything they sell. Nothing I've gotten there seems to even live longer than the warranty period.
