Hello everyone. I am trying to identify my trany. I have a 1999 ford E250 8cyl that is from a gas company so they had it fited to use propane. Van ran fine when i notice hesitation moving off in 1st (engine would rev slightly) Long story short, I pulled down the trany and disassemble it. I found the number 13 thrust bearing between the casing and park gear had failed. No damage to anything except the park gear was rough from the scraping of the bearing. Im ready to buy a kit but i have a question and hope someone can assist. The vin on the van says its a 4r100 trany, It has a a 20 bolt oil pan, the output shaft only has a park gear and no speed sensor wheel. This is the confusing part. The ATSG book shows a 4 and a 6 Pinion Planetary carrier, My trany only have a 3 Pinion Planetary carrier. Would that make my trany a E4OD? and all so i hear of a steel pinion planetaty gear, is anly the gears steel and the casing aluminum or is the whole thing steel. I dont need to beef up the E250 for heavy hauling, I just us it to haul stuff from the home inprovement store. How will this affect the rebuild kit i buy? Should I just install the 3 gear carrier and continue at that stage? I hope its a 4r100. The atsg manual is much better and clearer than the E4OD manual. Thank for your reply
I have 1 speed sensor located on the extension housing. I have a RWD van. How about the 3 pinion planetary carrier, would i run into problem if i kept it as is? eaven thou the ATSG shows a 4 or 6 pinion. I dont do no heavy hauling. The van vin says it has a 4R100. Perhaps the trany was changed out?
I've never seen a VIN that showed the transmission type. What digit is that?
If there are no speed sensors on top of the trans it is an E4OD. If you've gone this far without problems with a three pinion I expect it would still work for you.
Sorry about the typo. It's not the vin. The trany code on the door is E. I don't want to have to redo the trany again if I don't have to. I would rather upgrade to at least a 4 pinion system. What parts am I looking at replacing if i go with the 4 or 6 pinion? Can I use the manual for the 4r100 seeing it's more clearer and detailed than the manual for the E4OD? It seems that all the clearance are the same. I guest the kit I get will say E4OD (4R100).
