Hey guys I'm in mid process of tearing down my 76. Is there a lot of people that get rid of the cab fuel tank and keep the rear or other way around. Or do people usually keep both tanks? Just wondering if it's worth taking the cab tank out and putting some custom sub boxes back there.
Most opt to delete the cab tank due to gasoline odors or for more interior storage. ... And some simply don't like the idea of having 19 gallons of flammable liquid or explosive vapors six inches behind their backs.
I would remove it just to get a place to store my extra rocket launcher....or what ever "custom sub boxes" are? lol Yes, remove it if you want, its been done before.
My 74 F350 dually car hauler came from the factory with only the in cab gas tank. Years ago, I added a second tank behind the rearend, but the tank behind the seat is still there, and working just fine. I never notice any gas smell, and after owning the truck for over 26 years now, I have not been converted to charcol and ash yet. If I removed the in cab tank, I guess I would get a minor amount of extra space behind the seat, but the additional distance between gas stops with 2 tanks far outways a little bit of added storage room.
if you don't wanna hassle with doing a under the bed install a buddy of mine made his own set up with 2 separate racing fuel cells in an aluminum diamond plate tool box behind the cab with a switch to change between tanks since one ran regular unleaded and other ran race fuel (coupled with electronic exhaust cutouts made an awesome sleeper truck) its discreet and as long as you bolt it to your bed its safe lol plus a little extra cool factor when your filling the tank and an added bonus of not having to cut up parts of your original bed......
The only reason to get rid of an incab tank is if you really want the incab storage. I have never in my entire life heard of an incodent with an in cab tank.
If you get hit hard enough to damage the tank that your sitting on, you're already dead.
In cab tanks do not rust out.
If you develope the slightest leak, the moment you open the door to get in you will notice it instantly in that little cab.
