While out for a drive this morning I was just noticing that my ECT bounces between 184* and 188*. It will basically warm up to 188 and over several minutes creep down to 184, then back up to 188. This is since I have been using my Scan Gauge that I bought in December. My EOT stays around 192*-193*. It will of course rice to about 197*, when going up a long steep grade like I did this morning. The ECT actually got up to about 191* at that same time. I was just wondering if my temperatures will stay about the same when the ambient air temp is around say 80-90* out. I know some will say that I may need a T-stat and that may be true since it has rarely seen 190* yet, but I figure that when the summer rolls around, which is when I mainly use the truck, it would hold 190 no problem. I am just hoping that the EOT stays around that low to mid 190* zone. What are your thoughts concerning the effects of ambient air vs these two engine temps and the health of my oil cooler? It is not really that I am concerned, but since diesel is new to me I am just trying to get my thoughts together.
I purchased my 6.0L pickup in December of last year. I didn't know when I bought the truck that ECT should be around 190F. As I monitored the truck the ECT would vary between 180-183F with the EOT changing between 187-190F.
I did a coolant flush and replaced the thermostat this past January. Now my ECT is 190-193F when driving at 70mph and my EOT varies between 197-199F at the same speed.
I expect a little higher ECT/EOT temperatures in the summer but not by much.

When you did your coolant flush did you use any chemicals? Did you put the Ford Gold back in or did you use the Red Cat ELC?

That was sort of what I was thinking. I feel like especially when I am towing this summer it should definitely make it to the 190* mark easily. If you do not mind me asking, at what temperature does your oil usually run at when fully warmed up?

Ok, thanks for the info. I guess that since my EOT and ECT are pretty much the same as your numbers then my Oil Cooler must be in pretty good shape for now. If I am not mistaken didn't you replace your oil cooler recently? If so that makes me feel pretty good as that might be something I do not have to worry about for a while. It seems that right now the only concern for me would be the STC fitting, but it almost seems wrong to tear into a engine that currently has not problems. I just don't want to get stuck out along way from home. I wish there was a way to just monitor ICP or IPR to determine when to replace it.

I flushed with VC-9 and then flushed with distilled water 5 times. The coolant that was in the truck looked like a mixture of gold and green coolant. There was a tinge of green color when I emptied it.
Ford Gold coolant went into the truck. It was my choice instead of the ELC.

The bad part about the STC fitting is that it can fail without warning. The good part is you only have to remove the turbo to get to the HPOP to replace the fitting.
Mine runs around 5 degrees hotter in the summer under similar conditions, and up to 15 degrees hotter while towing depending on the situation. Your truck sounds completely normal to me.

I am comfortable with the low silicate Ford Gold coolant. Ford Gold coolant (VC-7B) is designed for the 6.0L and 6.4L engines by Ford and why I chose this over the ELC's.

Yes, that is what I have been told. I will plan to change it in the summer. I have a 1,000 mile trip planned in August to attend a race and really would hate to get stuck out on the road. The truck did great towing that same trip last year. It might not be too bad if I can leave the intake and all the other stuff in place. I would like to to an egr delete, but I may wait until it gives up or the oil cooler needs replaced to worry about that.
