typical ECT in 100* weather?

hey guys quick question here,
i am regualry seeing ECT temps of 210* during regular unloaded driving.
oil temps stay about 4-10* above ECT.
is this higher than it should be considering the outside temps have been 95-100*?
within the last 5K miles i have done T stat, oil cooler, water pump, new degas bottle, and external coolant filter.

just kind of curious because these are higher than i was seeing before because the t stat failed open so i was running lower temps that it should have been.
i will be towing a 6k load thursday for the first time since things were replaced and just want to make sure im not going to overheat.

you may have a bad thermostat... that would not be unheard of. Pull it out and boil it watching temps when it opens with a thermometer. Buy a second t-stat and do the same, it should be close to 192* if its a stock unit. Use a laser thermometer to check your radiator as well.

My ECT isn't any different in 100* weather than is is in winter... it's still 200-204 because I'm running a Mishi-200 t-stat. Hotter weather just means your getting to that temp faster as your starting from a higher number. If yours is getting to 210 consistently, you have a problem... probably the t-stat and that would be the place to start. It's easy to get to and more likely to cause issues... its the flow restriction.

Here's a test, no money involved..... remove the t-stat and drive the truck until its warmed up and that maybe is 160-180'ish temps. If that holds true... it's the t-stat. Or put a new t-stat in and if you repeat the 210, that isn't the issue, it's somewhere else.

ok sounds good, thanks for the info.
will try this out tonight. probably just go ahead and throw a new t stat in.

also do i need to get one from ford or will this one work just as good?

I do not think there is a typical temp. Each system is going to perform a little differently due to variations in their efficency.
Higher out side ambient temps reduce the heat exchange efficency the closer the air temp is to the coolant temp you reduce the rate of heat exchange possible.

that's fine... order on-line, use TRT30 for a coupon code to save 30% off, then select in-store pick-up and go get it. Don't forget the o-ring.

You could also pick-up the Actron digital laser temp gun for $40 while your there... to check your radiator for cold spots.

thats what i was thinking, but i still think im running a little warmer than i should be, especially since this is with no load at all.

One thing I didn't see you mention was were those temperatures in stop and go driving or on the highway?

Mine gets the same temps unloaded if it is 100 degrees outside and I am doing in town driving.

My temps will typically be around 198-200 on the highway at 65MPH unloaded at 100 degrees outside.

I think if you look in the a/c section you can get infared heat gun for a little less.
At least when I bought mine at 14.95 you could but it is probably more now.
Not a actron tho but still claims a +_5 deg. rateing.

I'm in tampa, mine stays around 196 to 200, when it hits 200 the fans come on and cool it down to 192 to 194.

Pulled the 5th wheel 400 miles last week, outside air temps were 98-103, coolant ran 212* going and 206* coming home, all flat land. I saw 220 on a couple of small florida hills. Oil temps 8-10 higher. Running around unloaded it runs 190-192.

It's due for a coolant change now and when I dump it I'm putting in a new Motorcraft rad. 14 years on the original, I think I've pushed it long enough. I'm curious to see if it drops my temps any pulling.

would be interesting to see if your temps do drop with a new radiator.

typical ECT in 100* weather?

so I brought the trailer home tonight so I don't have to get up so early in the morning. drove about 20 miles with it.
it's about 2k dry weight. never got over 205 EOT and 200 ECT?
maybe it has something to do with my tunes?
earlier I was in a 65 hp DD tune.
when I scooped up the trailer I came down to a 40 hp towing tune.
