Accessing trouble codes via check engine light
I'd like to find out why the check engine light has come on in my '94 Ranger 4.0 v6. I don't, unfortunaltely, have a scanner or equivalent to read what trouble code(s) have gone off.
My Haynes manual mentioned in this year vehicle you can jumper the pins in the diagnostic port to get to get the check engine light to in effect Morse code you the trouble code. They were unfortunately a little vague about how to do this sans using an analog voltmeter.
Anybody have some experience getting the light to do this without frying the box in the process? A link to a tutorial website would be most helpful. Also, does anybody know where the port is located (engine compartment, in cab under dash, etc) Thank you.
