The L blast furnace is going to be imploded in the coming weeks. They are working on getting the lighted star ( a christmas decoration that has been there for many years) off of that before that comes down.
Piece by piece over 100 years of steel making are disappearing from there. Pennsylvania Steel Company started making steel there in 1889. At one point in time it was the largest steel mill in the world and the only one with a deep water port as well as rail and road access. During its heyday it employed over 30,000 people. It even had its own shipyard which was sold before Bethlehem Steel went bankrupt.
Yes it is Tim. The area I live in was practically built around the mill. The historic part of my community was built by the Dundalk company which was owned by Bethlehem Steel. We use to have traffic jams in my area 6 times a day on the main roads because of the shift changes at the mill. Even had GM in the area building vehicles. LAst vehicle produced in Baltimore was the astro vans. But they closed that in 05 and tore it down. ALthough we are getting an amazon warehouse built in its place right now.
That they are Tim. I went past there the other day. It is a huge bldg they are putting up. News said it will be a 1 million-square-foot fulfillment center and add at least 1000 jobs to my area. That will help off set some of the jobs lost when the mill closed.
It is the warehouse where they put orders together and ship them out Shawn. With one being less then 4 miles from my house I could get certain things from Amazon the next day for almost nothing in shipping.
Could be Tim. I know they are still putting the walls and roof on it right now. It is taking up a rather large chunk of the old GM plants location. They could also use the rail lines nearby if they wanted to. It is also right near I95 and teh Port of Baltimore.
