Fuel system?

2004 6.0 Changed the 2 fuel filters last weekend. Cranked ok and ran for short time. Since then my dad says it wont crank at all.
Maybe I have air in my lines?
How do I purge it out?
Thanks in advance.

Oem filters??? Check your lower filter. Pull it back off and check the oring. If not damaged put some oil on the oring and put it back on. Make sure it is all the way tight. Cycle key for 20 or so sec, 3 or 4 times giving 30 or so seconds in between cycles.

Thanks bobcat, I'll try the cycling thing, Im sure my dad didnt do that. Someone had told me before about that, I forgot.
He put the bottom filter on, I double checked it and had to tighten the rest of the way, it wasnt close to tight. The bottom filter was real hard to loosen, had to use wrench most all the way, also putting back on had to use wrench, wasnt cross threaded tho.?

Pretty normal to have to use socket or wrench it almost out. Just make sure you got it all the way on.

Tried the ignition cycling several times. It sputters good for 2 sec then nothing. Cycling takes 20 seconds for all noises to stop, then another noise starts up again until 35 secs are up, sounds like a cd trying to eject over and over. All noises last 35 secs everytime I turn the key back on???

Push your inertia switch. See what happens?? Passenger side kicker panel. There is hole in the plastic with a button the size of dime in there.

Check the battery voltage.

Two definitions
Crank or turn over : To run the starter. May or may not start.
To Start : Engine runs on it own after you let the key return to RUN.

So when you say it won't crank that says dead batteries or a starter problem.

When you turn the key from OFF to RUN can you hear the fuel pump?
It on the frame under the driver. Also you should hear some clicking
in the engine bay. That is the injectors cycling.

Yes all the pumps run when I turn key on for 20 seconds up to 35 seconds.
Sorry about the "wont crank"
Motor turns over fine, sputters like it wants to start 1st 2 seconds then nothing. batteries and alternator should be fine.
The truck sits mainly, all during the winter my dad would crank it maybe once a week. Has no block heater on it for some reason???
It would crank but take 4 or more tries before cranked all the way. It would sputter and kick and not run, like it was fuel starved. After 4 or 5 times of doing that, having to restart it it would settle out and run right.
Thought maybe water in fuel from condensation?? Water light on dash doesnt come on?
Thanks for the help.

Remove the secondary ( upper ) filter and turn the key to the on position and see if its pumping fuel up to the upper filter.

Can you describe where this button is? Passenger side? The fuel pump is on the driver's side. Kicker panel is inside at floor between door and firewall?
I guess I can go look for a hole in the plastic somewhere here shortly.
Push this button for how long? Push it while ignition is on or off?
What exactly does this button do?

It is an inertia switch that cuts the power to the fuel pump during a high impact collision. It is located behind the passenger side kick panel ( next to the passengers right foot when they are in the front passenger seat ) on my 06' if you get down there and look you can see an area of the kick panel that is cut out where you can reach over the top and push down on the button. The button resets the inertia switch.

It would be a good idea to remove the secondary ( upper ) fuel filter and turn the key to the run position and see if you are even getting fuel up to the upper filter. Also what is the truck we are working with, F-350, F-450, F-550? How much fuel is in the tank?

F-250 3/4 fuel in tank.
Got her going by loosening upper filter and heard air purge out ( should have done that when it was installed ) loosened allen screw on fuel pump/filter and drained some fuel out. Maybe thats where you drain water out of system??
After that it sputtered again trying to run. 3rd time cranked right up and is running perfect. Not sure if it was air in lines or water in fuel??
Been sitting a long time, took it out for a drive and blew lots of black smoke when accelerating hard. It all has blown out, no more black smoke.
Could it have had carbon build up might have been giving me running problems also.
Thanks alot everyone.
