Haven't started the truck in a couple days. 97 Expy XLT 4.6ltr. 4X2 Turned the key it started to crank then went cold dead(no lights, radio, no power at all). Almost like the battery terminals were loose or corroded. Like the cables were disconnected. Popped the hood and checked the terminals and everything looked ok. Turned the ignition on again everything came on and it started right up. Radio was reset so I lost all power. Mind you it has been 5 degrees and below for the couple days I didn't use it. Supposed to warm up this weekend at least to 20 so I'm going to take off the cables and clean them. Would the ignition switch going bad cause this? Or am I just thinking too much, it only happened once. It's just too cold to get stranded. Thanks in advance.
I would remove the cables and wire brush the battery posts and the inside of the clamp while using a little blast of WD-40 to make sure I had a good connection.
I personally would suggest using die electric grease instead of wd40. Also how old is the battery? Maybe suggest having it load tested while you are at it.
Sticker on the side says 10/10 so I'm assuming it's about 3.5 years old. I am hoping for dirty cables the post are looking a little white now that I can see in the daylight. Interstate wants $130.00 for a new battery so I figured I'd clean the posts before I go ahead with the battery. I do have a new multipourpose marine crank/deep cell battery for the boat. Will that battery work or will it screw something up because of the deep cell?
Thanks
[QUOTEWell if it's a 36-month battery then it has surpassed it's lifespan by 6-months. ][/QUOTE]
Yup you're right I never did the math. Happened after work again today after work. Left the ignition on and popped the hood. Grabbed the neg cable and heard a crackle and sizzle. Bingo!!! Everything started working. I am going to swap out the batt. with the new one I have while I'm cleaning the cables. Hopefully this will be an easy fix problem, those don't come around often. Thanks again
Had a similar issue with my BKO back in the day. When issues like that start popping up I get paranoid and start thinking of all the "what ifs" that could happen in regards to being stranded.
Let us know how it turns out...Im sure after a new battery and general clean up / maint..she will do you right.
As far as Marine Batteries...I ran one in my old F-150 for years...no worries there either.
Cleaned the cables and it works perfectly. The truck sits on the street and Chicago loves it's salt which is causing havac on everything. The terminals had some corrosion but were just totally white and crusted with salt residue. It's been a bad winter and is taking it's toll on everything including me. The marine battery sits too high and I can't use it so I'm going to try to ride it out till summer with the one that's there. I'll use the marine batt. in my YJ since the boats for sale.
