Steering wheel w\audio controls question

I have a 99 ranger and was playing around with a idea here to do a swap of my stock wheel to one with the audio controls on the wheel. next question is where can I find one and hook it up? has any one done these kind of conversions?

First of all, you will need the steering wheel, you can most likely get it from a salvage yard off a loaded Explorer or Mountaineer. You will also need the stereo deck from the same vehicle, or from one that was equipped with the steering wheel audio controls.
Second, you'll need wiring diagrams glore. The wiring harness is most likely integrated with in entire dash harness, therefore it's hard to just get the wiring you need from the Explorer. You will probably have to custom wire the steering wheel controls, which could get messy trying to keep things neat. If you decide you are going to try this, get as much of the Explorer wiring as you can.
Another consideration is the air bag, which is different from your current one. Wiring is probably the same, but you need to make sure.
As far as I know, aftermarket decks aren't compatible with factory steering wheel audio controls. Therefore you must have the factory deck from a vehicle that came originally equipped with the controls.
This seems to be a quite involved process, I havn't heard of anyone else completing htis conversion. Let us know how it turns out.

Thanks for the reply Tiggie, well so much for that idea, on the wiring side, the HU i have is a Eclipse and it has a set up for using factory stearing remotes if the truck came so equiped, I was wondering how involved the wiring part would be, something simple then maybe, to bad, that would be a cool thing to do.

If you have instructions from your deck on how to hook up the steering wheel controls, it could possibly be somewhat easier, depending on how detailed the intructions are.

there are 2 wires running out of the eclipse labled for the remote steering. in the manual there is instructions on how to configure using programs you down load off thier web site and load it onto your player using cd-r for spesific steering remotes, so it sounds flexable to me that it could be doable, just what kind of re-wiring are we talking about? this could be a beginning of a new fad...

I would go to the junkyard and pull the wheel and all wiring related to it. Then get yourself a wiring diagram for the Model you pull the parts off of that list the steering wheel controls so you know what each wire is supposed to do. I still don't think it would an easy job. It would be sweet if you could get this to work, however.

sounds like i would have to buy the whole steering collumn to do it, or i could be sneaky.... but i will need to see what kind of whiring I need, if its just 2 wires, then it might not be so bad
