I was able to resolve this issue on Saturday. The problem was the arm that the push bottom pushes against or lever had a worn grove in it that was deep enough to not push the door latch far enough so that the door latch or gear would move freely. So I removed it and welded it up and ground it smooth with my dremel tool. It works great now. Thanks for everyone's help on this.
I did pull the cover off Saturday and I can see that when I push the door button in that it does not push the lever far enough to disengage the door latch. I didn't know about the button adjustment. I will take a look at that. Thanks for your help.
Maybe this will help. A new door handle push button kit #08565-6, $15.95 from Sacramento Vintage Ford. I bought one and it works great. If the button mechanism is worn this will fix it. Be aware there may be more going on but you can get all the new parts you need to repair your door handle problem.
Sacramento Vintage Ford Scroll down to the correct part number and you can see what it looks like.
I know what it's like to have an irritating problem and just ignore it for other problems that seem to be more of a priority, however the door is a safety issue so I wish you good luck at tackling this problem. I realize the handle parts are up into the door and hard to see but if you look at the parts diagram from Number Dummy that will help you immensely in repairing the problem.
Use all the advise everyone has offered and you will solve the problem.
Just think what would happen if you had an emergency to either exit or enter the truck and the door wouldn't open, that could ruin your day.
Missed your I fixed it post. Glad it's resolved, great job.
Good luck and best wishes with the door.
