A couple of months ago the driver side door lock started having a mind of its own. It is ONLY the driver side front door lock. Using the key fob/clicker-Sometimes it will unlock and sometimes it won't. There is no rhyme or reason to it either from what I can tell. It may unlock for 5-6 times and then not for 1 and then work again. Or it may not work for 2 weeks and then suddenly work for 2 days. Using the key won't unlock either. If it doesn't unlock the first time trying it won't ever unlock on that particular instance of trying (does that make sense??). Using the lock/unlock button inside won't unlock any easier either (driver or passenger side-same results as clicker). The only way to unlock is by using the handle on the inside to open the door. Sometimes it opens easy and sometimes you can feel a lil resistance like it is stuck or caught.
I am a poor divorced girl with a co-worker who is willing to try and see if he can fix it. Just thought I would get some advice for him as he is wanting to make certain he has all of the info available.
The first thing I would suggest doing is remove the door panel and give the mechanical linkages for the lock a good visual inspection. If nothing obvious jumps out, then hope that this will be one of the times that the lock fails to work from the fob or door switch and operate the switch while backprobing the lock solenoid wires to see if power is being sent to the lock solenoid to unlock the door. If no voltage is getting to the solenoid, the issue is likely a bad wire in the accordion boot between the door and cab (common issue).
Since you mention sometimes even unlocking with the door handle is tough, there's a chance something will be identified during the visual inspection that may be causing the lock solenoid to bind.
Interesting - very similar problem just showed up in our year 2000 Explorer, but with couple of differences (only the inside handle works!):
Unlocking with the outside handle does not work at all.
When trying to unlock with a FOB it's trying to unlock but not moving enough.
This is not happening randomly - it's not working 100% of time
We are going to pull out the panel next weekend and inspect the mechanical rods etc. for something stuck, bent or needing lubrication. It does not look like electrical problem to me.
