I got a 94 F150 2x4 and just today broke my auto trans shifter tube right next to the steering column...shifter is extremely sloppy and cannot shift into park or low gear 1. But I can go into neutral, drive and reverse (all I really need I guess). After doing some research ive found that its actually pretty common...ive ordered the new shifter tube/shaft. Just wondering if its happened to anyone else?
Yes but only thing i needed to replace was the shift tube bushings. I still have an issue. When I have it dropped down manually into first gear It will not go into second unless I almost put it into Drive...Then to get it into Drive I have to put it in almost neutral position...I think the Neutral Saftey switch might be bad on mine...Autozone parts...What can you expect.
I've never seen a broken tube... my issue was the two torx head bolts that hold the shifter tube assembly to the linkage under the dash. Tightened those up, and it's been fine.

Toplait, adjust your gear selector pointer.
Yeah I saw a youtube video about that, I checked mine and theyre tight, I mean I heard a pretty good crack noise when I went to shift and then it was real loose, I saw another video where a guy has the same problem as me, with a broken tube.
No, its not the adjustment screw under the dash...
You can feel it in the shifter it self. For example, when I drop it down in to first gear and start driving. Then when I try and put it in 2nd gear while i'm driving it stays in first....To get it to go into 2nd gear I have to lift up more on the shifter. Almost placing it into the drive position just so I can get the tranny to go into 2nd gear... IT's firmly in 2nd gear just will not shift into 2nd gear...
I can put it in Drive from 2nd gear and it will stay in 2nd gear... It's in the drive position but it will not go to drive with out shifting to natural back to drive.
^^You're certain that the two torx bolts at the end of the shift tube are tight? That description matches the symptoms of those bolts being loose perfectly.
I snapped one in my old '94, I wasn't being hard on it either, I just swapped the whole column for a junkyard one for $30 and got a nicer steering wheel as a bonus.
It must be fairly common too, when I called the junkyard the woman that answered the phone actually asked me if I broke the shifter shaft when I told her I was looking for an automatic column.

3xx ^^
I had several trucks and vans do this too. Cant hurt to try to tighten them up. They may look tight but are not!
